Styria
The "green heart of Austria" is proud of its largely intact natural environment with its dense forests. In pure unpolluted nature one can still breathe fresh air and relax. The country between the Dachstein in the west and the wine-covered hills in the south-east is characterised by steep mountains, succulent pastures, quiet Alpine valleys, thermal springs, orchards and fields, castles and palaces.
Styria is part of the Austrian heartland and belongs to Austria since 1192. Styria became a duchy under the rule of the Ottokares and named after there royal seat Steyr in Upper Austria; in 1192 Styria went to the Austrian ruling dynasty the Babenbergers. After the end of World War I a part of southern Styria went to Yugoslavia - today Slovenia.
