Upper Austria
Upper Austria’s versatile landscapes are among Europe’s finest and most varied scenery nowhere else could you find crystal clear mountain lakes, endless farmlands, rivers and forests, rolling plains and lofty mountains, all thrown into the mix. Upper Austria reveals the best of what Austria has to offer. The area is encircled by the Danube, Bavarian Woods, Bohemian Forest and Waldviertel Region, Upper Austria’s North offers a relaxed holiday in many of the quiet villages and farms. The densely wooded highlands, rolling plains and lush meadows are interspersed with rocks of natural granite. Towns with downtown squares that have changed little in hundreds of years, lush green meadows, long and winding roads and mysterious castles and ruins.
Originally a unity with Lower Austria (Ostarrichi from 996) Upper Austria received its own "Landjudge" in 1264 and had its own head of the provincial government from 1329. In 1784 it became a "Crownland" and in 1861 an archduchy.
