Lorraine
Larger and less strongly characterised by the German dialect than its neighbour Alsace, Lorraine is less chocolate box pretty. It’s a region better explored in dramatic sweeps than minute detail.
From the haunting solitude of the WWI battlefields to the elegantly refined beauty of Nancy, the drama of Lorraine is on a big scale. A scale that nature has choreographed with largely unspoiled countryside, rolling farmlands, the major rivers of the Moselle, the Meurthe and Meuse, all set on the luxuriantly forested stage of the Lorraine plateau.
Lorraine is the only French region to have borders with three other countries: Belgium (Wallonia), Luxembourg, and Germany (Saar, Rhineland-Palatinate). It also borders the French regions of Franche-Comté, Alsace, and Champagne-Ardenne. The location of Lorraine led to it being seen as a strategic asset and as the crossroads of four nations, it had a very important role in European affairs. Lorraine also has many rivers run through it, which include the Rhine, Moselle, Meurthe, and Meuse.
